Why is the dispute between doctors and the province being largely ignored by the public, while the multiple contract battles between teachers’ unions and the Ontario Government consistently make headlines day after day?
The government has cut doctors’ fees by about 5% this year, and another large cut is rumoured to be coming, and will be as much as 10%.
The Ontario Medical Association, which represents 33,600 doctors in the province, has been trying to grow public support for the doctors, but has yet to succeed in that attempt.
Doctors are threatening to leave if these cuts continue. Doctors complain that these cuts will hurt the medical community, but many critics question exactly how these cuts will hurt patients.
Some suggest that patient wait times will increase. Is it even possible for the already painfully long waits for common surgeries to be lengthened?
