The Toronto Maple Leafs kick off their regular season tomorrow night at the Air Canada Centre against “rivals” Montreal Canadiens. Meanwhile, Raffi Torres was slapped with a forty-one game suspension without pay for interference and an illegal check to the head against Anaheim Ducks forward Jakob Silfverberg during a preseason game. Torres has quite the laundry list of reckless actions over his 703 game career, a list of indiscretions the NHL could no longer tolerate. But forty-one games is half of the regular season. Reactions are mixed on whether this was a suitable punishment. Former NHL player Theo Peckham tweeted the suspension was insane with the hashtag #freeraffi.
Was the NHL right for suspending Torres without pay for that long?
