Will new job action by school secretaries and office staff put students’ lives in harm’s way?
Starting Monday, the front doors of Halton public elementary schools will be left unlocked, as secretaries and other office support staff have decided not to monitor the buzzer system that forces visitors to obtain entry into the school by alerting the main office.
This new job action is NOT part of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario campaign, but part of the negotiations ongoing between the union representing secretaries and office staff.
Mike Stafford heard a caller to The Oakley Show this morning explain why this move will open up the school’s doors to pedophiles, and lead to molestation in the bathrooms.
Halton’s public school board director Stuart Miller claims that children will remain safe, as cameras will still be monitored, and people will continue to sign in upon entry.
“We believe the practices we are following will maintain safety … or we would make different decisions,” Stuart told the Hamilton Spectator.
Parents have shared their anger and fears with this decision via social media.
While this decision put young lives at risk? Or are parents overreacting? Ontario schools were mandated to lock their doors only a few years ago, and there weren’t a rash of kidnappings before such requirement came into play…
