A Conservative MP is in some hot water after reports that the MP bought hundreds of dollars worth of alcohol for minors at a nightclub in St. Catharines.
Rick Dykstra, Conservative MP for St. Catharines, was at Mansion House nightclub in St. Catharines on September 2nd, and picked up a tab for a group of underage girls, one of the girls 16 at the time. Dykstra, and his campaign, deny that he had any idea that the girls were underage, and was under the assumption that everyone at the nightclub was of age. As his campaign spokesman is quoted as saying, “Given Ontario’s rigorous ID requirements, Mr. Dykstra had no reason to believe anyone in the establishment was underage. Mr. Dykstra did not purchase drinks for any of the individuals in question, nor did he see them consume any alcohol from the bottles he purchased.”
Two of the girls tweeted about the experience, (they are not deleted) to which there are reports that Dykstra attempted to bribe the girls to take the posts down. Buzzfeed reported that a supporter of the Conservative incumbent reached out to the 16-year-old girl and offered her indefinite VIP service at Mansion House , once she was of legal drinking age, if she refrained from tweeting about the night and if she claimed Dykstra never bought her drinks.
Do you think MP Rick Dykstra knew what he was doing, or do you give him the benefit of the doubt?
