Council spent most of the day debating whether to regulate ride sharing services like UBER.
The debate was heated at times with councillors Rob Ford, Giorgio Mammoliti and Jim Karygiannis all trying to get councillors to ban UBER from operating in the city.
The meeting saw emotions run high for much of the day as members of the taxi industry and UBER supporters cheered and jeered from the gallery several times.
Speaker Frances Nunziata even threatened to remove them a few times.
Mayor John Tory’s motion to send the issue back to the licensing and standards committee eventually passed by a vote of 32-12.
City Hall has requested that Uber put a temporary hold on operations in Toronto. Uber Canada’s general manager Ian Black says they will not comply with that request.
Council also voted to reduce the base fare in cabs by a dollar from $4.25 to $3.25.
City staff will now develop regulations to level the playing field & ensure all drivers operate safely, fairly & within the rules. #topoli
