A Starbucks employee wrote about her struggles as a barista in a US store – mainly with the erratic shifts, low pay & difficulties planning their lives outside of work. She notes she’s seen co-workers quit on short notice because they can’t earn enough to make ends meet or some ‘skeleton-shifts’ – where an employee calls in sick, leaving 2 employees to manager the cash, drive-thru and making drinks – that leaves employees physically exhausted, and sometimes forces them into sick-leave. Others complain about the low wages, and in the US at $8.25, make it extremely difficult to live. Is this the new workplace hazard? Overworked, underpaid and feeling stressed most of the time?
