A man has been arrested in the small eastern Ontario community of Wilno after three women were shot dead. The suspect was identified as Basil Joseph Borutski, a former millwright whose life seems to have spiralled out of control during the past few years. Two of the victims knew Borutski and had relationships with him in the past. Borutski was recently released from jail after being sentenced to nineteen months for assault, theft and a firearms offence. People who had had dealings with him sought protection from the OPP after hearing of the shootings. One told police the suspect had allegedly posted a list of people who he was seeking revenge against.
Should he have been out of prison? Were these deaths preventable?
