The newest Head Coach of The Toronto Maple Leafs met with the media Thursday morning as training camp is officially open.
Mike Babcock didn’t shy away from much in the few moments he spent with reporters.
Among the questions Babcock was forced to answer concerned the captain – Dion Phaneuf. “I think he’s going to have a real good year.” Babcock noted. “He’s our leader.”
The new head coach suggested the entire defensive corps will be a lot more relaxed this season given the amount of help they will be getting from players up front. “When our “D” understand how supportive our forwards are going to be, I think it’s going to make them happy.”
Babcock, was also asked about the often times ruthless media in the hockey-mad city.
“Everyone keeps telling me that. They paint you guys out to be something awful but I don’t believe that.” Babcock said. “I believe without the players, without the fans and without the media you have no National Hockey League.”
The Leafs opened the day up for physicals at the Master card Centre, Thursday.
They will later fly to Halifax, Nova Scotia for as the team launches this season’s on-ice training camp at Bedford’s BMO Centre.
