The Conservatives aren’t backing down on this controversial battle over the niqab.
Despite the Federal Court of Appeal dismissing the federal government’s appeal over a ban on face coverings at citizenship ceremonies, Stephen Harper and his party state that they are considering all legal options and will not give up their fight to make it mandatory that anybody taking the oath will have to reveal their face.
The judges leading this appeal made their decision quickly so that Zunera Ishaq, the woman who challenged the ban, would be able to obtain her citizenship in time to vote in the October 19 federal election (wonder who she WON’T be voting for!).
After the 29-year-old devout Muslim refused to take part in the ceremony because she’d have to reveal her face, this legal battle began.
Should the Conservatives admit defeat in this fight? Would they be better off dropping this, especially with an election looming in the near future? Will this drive voters away? Aren’t the Conservatives trying to uphold Canadian values? Are you happy with the decision made by the Court of Appeal?
