Zappos – headquartered in Las Vegas – is said to be the happiest shoe store in the US. CEO Tony Hsieh abolished managers, eliminated job titles and denounced its organizational hierarchy, putting all its authority in a radical new system known as ‘holacracy’. The idea behind holacracy is all employees are free from direct supervision, but rather are expected to join ‘circles’ that are ‘headed’ but not ‘run’ by a ‘lead link’. There, they will propose their own job descriptions, ratify the ‘roles & responsibilities’ of others & decide what projects the group should undertake. While the success of this holacracy is to be determined – as it’s still a work in process – there is definitely a shift in the workplace where “information technology is allowing the emergence of a new form of organization” – a paradigm shift were employees don’t always need to be monitored in order to perform proficiently. In your workplace, do you think your boss plays a crucial role in your success? Would you prefer to NOT have a boss?
