“It annoys me when I see men with an arm slung round their girlfriend’s shoulders. It’s like ownership.” – Helen Mirren
Helen Mirren is calling out men who feel it is appropriate to have their arm slung around the girlfriend or wife, as Mirren is calling the act sexist. Speaking to an interviewer, Mirren wanted to stress to young women that it is not okay for men to do this as it is a gesture of “ownership” over your significant other. Although she stated that, “when you’re young, you want a guy to take your hand and look after you,” she stresses the fact that this gesture is demeaning in nature.
Mirren is known for her candor on the subjects of sexism and ageism in Hollywood. She has repeatedly spoken out on “the huge pressure on young girls to look a certain way,” and continually seeks for gender equality in the media. Mirren’s comments on the subject came up after a debate in the media over the topic of men paying woman compliments about the way they look.
