The federal Liberals are threatening to pull out of the Munk Debates later this month for two main reasons.
First, Justin Trudeau and company are concerned that the September 28 event will not provide adequate opportunity to discuss issues in French. Debate organizers have promised that the proceedings would be bilingual, something that the Liberals demanded from the get-go.
A Liberal campaign official estimates that only 15-20% of the debate will be in French.
But just as frustrating for the Liberals is the fact that audience tickets to the Munk Debate will cost a whopping $95 a piece!
Preferential treatment will also be given to Munk member, or “exclusive Canadians” as the Liberals have labeled them.
“We cannot accept that,” reads a letter from the Liberals highlighting these concerns, signed by campaign co-chairs Katie Telford and Dan Gagnier.
They believe that debates should be open to ALL Canadians.
Do you agree? Is it ‘undemocratic’ to slap a price tag on a function that could determine the country’s future?
