Mike is completely fed up with this sex education “furor” in Ontario. He’s voiced his displeasure with ALL groups and parties fighting this issue from all sides.
Some of his more conservative friends are disappointed with him, pointing out over the last 24 hours that Kathleen Wynne’s government did not properly consult the public on the new sex education curriculum. Mike points out that many times in the past, the Conservatives failed to properly consult on many major issues. He feels that ALL political parties ignore the public, no matter who’s in power or what the topic is. Where were the consultations about the fate of the 407 years when the Conservatives were in power in Ontario?
Mike is also tired of hearing Liberal politicians like Education Minister Liz Sandals claim that she’s being praised by people on the street for the government’s handling of this new subject matter.
And he’s not buying what the parents at Thorncliffe Park elementary school are trying to sell. They claim that they weren’t consulted properly on the curriculum, and it’s not appropriate for their children. He feels that these predominantly Muslim parents are worried that their children, especially their daughters, will soak in Western cultural beliefs that favour gender equality.
The first day of school saw some controversy regarding this new plank in the public education system in the province. Toronto’s Thorncliffe Park, which is Canada’s largest elementary school, was actually half-empty yesterday. Parents followed through on their promise to keep their children out of the classroom until the sex ed curriculum is canceled.
Many of the absent children gathered at a park next to the school, sat in their respective grades, and conducted pseudo-classes taught by community volunteers. They also kicked off their “classes” by singing “O Canada”.
Should this curriculum be delayed until more public consultations are held? Even if the government does take this approach, but after hearing protests from concerned parties they still decide to go through with the classes, won’t we be right back where we started? What’s the solution?
