Yesterday was Labour Day which saw the annual show of workers’ solidarity. According to Canadian Encyclopaedia, it was the Toronto’s Printers Union that led the charge for shorter work-weeks, ultimately leading to the Labour Day holiday becoming national. Laws were implemented back in 1894 institutionalizing the 8-hour day, 40-hour work week. But in 2015, is the 8 hour day just a myth? With much of the local population working part-time, causal, periodic work – with some days as long as 14hrs – is the 40hr work week a thing of the past? What’s better: Flex hours or is it better to punch a clock?
