Edwin Encarnacion was the man at Rogers Centre slugging his way into the Blue Jay record books on Saturday.
“Double-E” (also known as #Edwing on twitter) was a monster at the plate hitting three homeruns, including a grand-slam, cashing in nine runs to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to a 15-1 thrashing against the Detroit Tigers yesterday afternoon.
Fans threw their ball caps on the field as the first baseman/designated hitter hit a hat-trick of homers to give him a total of 29 and 90 RBI on the season.
He is the first Blue Jay to earn nine RBI in a single game since Roy Howell in 1977, which was the Jays inaugural season.
The Toronto Blue Jays now lead the American League East by one-and-a-half games over the New York Yankees with 33 games left to play.
Josh Donaldson batted in six runs in a game against the Los Angeles Angels on August 22nd.
Game three of the series versus Detroit is at 1:05 p.m. in Toronto.
