The latest numbers show that a majority of Ontario secondary students have passed the Grade 10 literacy tests.
The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test showed 82 percent of students writing the test for the first time were able to meet the minimum requirement of literary skills.
127,867 Ontario students wrote the exam this past April.
Female students found to be a bit higher, with an 86 percent rate, compared to 78 percent for males. English language leaders passed the test 73 percent of the time, and over half students with special needs passed with 54 percent.
The 82 percent rate has been steady for the past four years. In 2011, it was 83 percent.
The literacy agency, Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO), also found that students who failed the Grade 6 reading test had a 48 percent chance of passing the Grade 10 class. Five years ago, it was 59 percent. EQAO says they’re investigating why that is.
