A student house at Old Dominion University, in Norfolk, Virginia, is in some hot water after hanging some crude banners outside of their home on move-in day.
The Sigma Nu fraternity at Old Dominion thought it would be funny to place up some banners, reading “Freshman Daughter Drop Off,” with an arrow pointing at the front door, “Go Ahead And Drop Off Mom Too …” and “Rowdy And Fun, Hope Your Baby Girl Is Ready For A Good Time …”. Students, alumni, and staff were quick to voice their opinions on the banners, and, unsurprisingly, the reactions have been widely negative. ODU President, John Broderick, released a statement on Sunday, noting that he was outraged by the offensive messages. As soon as the school was notified of banners, the school worked very hard to make sure that they were removed from the home.
The ODU Student Government Association released its own Saturday, saying that, “Not only do these actions taken by a few individuals undermine the countless efforts at Old Dominion University to prevent sexual assault, they are also unwelcoming, offensive, and unacceptable.” While most of the feedback has drawn criticism over the messages of the banners, some have been lead to say that it is just a case of “boys being boys”.
