The RCMP has issued a warning about fraudulent phone calls being made in Ontario.
In each case, the caller identifies themselves as an RCMP officer calling to collect fines or taxes, and informs the victim they have to pay up immediately or face arrest within 24 hours.
Police say this tactic leaves the victim in shock and they respond by quickly sending out a payment; they believe it’s a real call since RCMP shows up in the caller ID.
The RCMP says it does not contact anyone for the purpose of collecting fines, taxes or any kind of payment.
You’re asked to contact your local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 if you, or someone you know, has been contacted.
