Hockey executives have long discussed the possibility of displaying ads on NHL jerseys, and they could soon be a reality. Sportswear giant Adidas has struck a deal to make jerseys for all thirty NHL teams starting in the 2017-18 season. Neither Adidas nor the NHL would comment, but league sources told TSN that taking on a new jersey manufacturer could be a “natural transition” for ads on the sweaters themselves. League officials have estimated that jersey ads could bring in as much as $120 million per year, or $4 million per team. Fans have taken to social media to express their outrage.
It is a break from tradition but are the ads worth the money they will generate? Do these multi-million dollar corporations need the money? Are you in favour of jersey ads?
