Peel Police are charging a detective on fraud and child pornography – related offences.
Chief Jennifer Evans says an investigation was launched following a complaint filed in April 2015. Following an in-depth investigation by the Internal Affairs Bureau, Peel officers charged 30 year member of Peel Regional Police on numberous charges on Wednesday morning.
Officials say Detective Craig Wattier, supervisor assigned to the Technological Crime Unit, is facing the following charges:
– Access Child Pornography contrary to section 163.1 (4.1) of the Criminal Code of Canada
– Possess Child Pornography contrary to section 163.1(4) of the Criminal Code of Canada
– Breach of Trust contrary to section 122 of the Criminal Code of Canada
– 2 Counts of Fraud Over $5000.00 contrary to section 380(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada
Wattier is currently in police custody pending a bail hearing scheduled for Thursday, August 20th, 2015 at the William Davis Courthouse in Brampton.
Evans released a statement Wednesday evening, saying “I take these allegations very seriously. The officer has been suspended with pay in accordance with the current legislation under the Police Services Act. As a police service there will be difficult days ahead but these allegations should not detract from the great work that is done on a daily basis by the other members of this police service.”
Investigation is ongoing.
