The newest Supreme Court of Canada appointee, Russell Brown blogged prolifically when he was a University of Alberta law school professor.
He described Justin Trudeau as “unspeakably awful”, hoped Stephen Harper did have a “hidden agenda”, “hoped” for a Stephen Harper majority government, accused lawyers nationally of having a pro Omar Khadr position because of their anti-Conservative government agenda and more.
Russell Brown was appointed to the Alberta bench in 2013, elevated to the Alberta Court of Appeal last year and appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada this year.
Should there be concern about a Supreme Court judge with such strong conservative views stated on social media?
Roy is joined by David Butt a prominent criminal lawyer who also states very strong views in his regular Globe and Mail columns. Would/should this disqualify David Butt from being appointed a judge?
Do we want only bland and tepid people with little or no social media, public presence heading our courts?
