Canada’s largest provincial union is planning to launch a “Dump Harper” campaign as soon as the election is called.
On Sunday, it’s expected Prime Minister Stephen Harper will call the election.
The Ontario Federation of Labour ‘s president Sid Ryan says the “Dump Harper” blitz will look similar to the “Stop Hudak” campaign against former Progressive Conservative leader Tim Hudak in last years provincial election.
Ryan says the union will be engaging members in “vulnerable” ridings across Ontario, including communities with a strong labour movement, like Oshawa, London, Welland and Hamilton.
“A union drive in our workplaces to drive down the Conservative vote could be very, very effective and could be the difference between wining and losing,” says Ryan.
If successful, the impact could be significant on the national vote, as Ontario accounts for over one third of the 338 seats up for grabs in October.
