Air safety investigators say they have a ”high degree of confidence” that a photo taken of aircraft debris found washed up on the shore of a remote island in the Indian Ocean is a wing component unique to a Boeing 777.
The news comes as the search for missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 also a Boeing 777 continues in the area, prompting speculation that the ‘flaperon’ may belong to the ill fated aircraft.
French law enforcement is on site on the island to examine the wind piece, which displays signs of having been in the water for about a year.
The Malaysian government has also dispatched a team to the Island to aid in the investigation.
Flight MH370 disappeared after take off from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia on March 8th, 2014, bound for Beijing with 239 people on board.
