Federal NDP leader Tom Mulcair promises $15-a-day childcare spots if his party wins this fall’s federal election.
“We’ve costed this program, we know exactly what’s required to do it, we’re going to make sure we work with the provinces and territories, it’s not one-size-fits-all; for example here in Ontario we’re the only province that has two full years of kindergarten so that would have to be taken into account as we build this,” said Mr. Mulcair, later adding that the program would be funded on a 60-40 basis between the federal government and the provinces.
The NDP leader said his plan has received support from chambers of commerce and boards of trade because employers realize the childcare plan is good for the economy.
“When you look at the numbers, how much flows back into the economy when you do have quality affordable childcare … you realize it’s not only something we can afford to do, it’s something we can’t afford not to do,” he said.
