A Hamilton man is dead after being attacked by a dog being walked by another man. The dog is not ‘obviously’ the cause of death, but it did attack and there were bite marks on the dead man. Hamilton Animal Control has the dog and police are searching for its owner.
As soon as the story broke, there was speculation and talk that the dog was one of the banned breeds in Ontario (Staffordshire Bull Terrier). Even talk of a ‘dog ban in urban areas’ began. Is it time for extensive breed bans in heavily populated urban areas, or is that just the knee-jerk, easy, but ineffective decision? The trouble with aggressive dogs is most frequently an inexperienced or abusive owner.
