A controversial vote will be taken over what Edmonton City Councillors eat at catered municipal events.
Yes, they’re spending time deciding what to eat, because all other pressing issues have been solved?
Many of the councillors themselves are surprised that this issue has been brought forward for a vote.
“Most of us said, ‘What the heck?’” said Councillor Tony Caterina.
Here’s what’s stirred up beef country.
Edmonton’s youth council has asked councillors to provide only vegan or vegetarian meals at catered events, in an effort to reduce water use, land use and carbon emissions that come with meat production and consumption.
Cheese would be off the menu, too!
Could this actually happen? Well, they’ve already banned bottled water in City Hall, and now serve only fair trade coffee.
If you like hamburgers, you’re evil. Beef cattle are raised on grains, which must be grown in large quantities to feed large herds. Fertilizers used with crops and manure run-off from cattle pollutes streams and rivers. Methane from cows is said to contribute to global warming.
Is there anything wrong with eating beef, chicken, pork or any other meats? Does it make you an enemy of Mother Nature? If a change in diet can help the planet, should we not all become vegans or vegetarians? Have you made the switch?
